I am doing something a little different this week. Yes, you read the title right - THIS IS THE FIRST ANIME REVIEW ON THE BLOG! Not that I need to add anything more to watch or add anything more to this blog BUT I AM DOING IT! I have done a Donghua review on the blog before (WHICH I do plan to watch more and review those too) but this is the first anime on the blog. You can read my Donghua review here.
Now a little information on my history with Anime. I have been watching Anime on and off over the years. I watched more Anime when I was younger but I had not watched an Anime in a LONG time before I checked out Jujutsu Kaisen. Like we are talking OVER 10 years of not watching an Anime. I had heard of Jujutsu Kaisen and knew what it was about but just never watched it. There are A LOT of Anime (popular and not popular) that I have never watched. I want to slowly watch more and then OF COURSE write reviews for them here. My reviews will probably be sporadic but we will see. 😊
So, what did I think of Jujutsu Kaisen? Let's find out...
*Now as per usual with any review I write, I will not be including any spoilers in this review.*
So, I am going to try and give you a short synopsis without giving too much away about the plot. I might not do the synopsis justice because I am trying to avoid spoilers. Itadori Yuji gets himself pulled into the world of curses, demons and sorcerers when he swallows a cursed talisman and becomes the host of Sukuna.
Overall, I had a lot of fun with this anime. I am really glad it was the first anime I watched in a VERY LONG time because I quite enjoyed this one. I was amazed by a lot of things. It drew me in right away and didn't let go. I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON 2! It was a little difficult to keep all the characters straight but MAN I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS! I am also a SUCKER for this story setup. I have always been a fan of the hero concept in anime and dramas. Let's go into more detail of what I liked and if I disliked anything in this anime.
THE PROS
1) The Animation - The animation and animation style is GORGEOUS! It really adds to the awe of the story and fight scenes in this drama. Whoever did the animation for this anime deserves an award. I just watched this anime in awe because it was just a masterpiece to watch from the animation alone. I remember thinking to myself "how did they do that" or "How did they come up with that" while I watched this.
2) The Characters - Even though there are a lot of characters introduced and to keep track of, I liked learning more about the characters. I especially liked learning what powers each character had. It was exciting when I finally got to see a character's powers in battle and all they could contribute to the fight. I also liked seeing the characters work together and interact with each other. It was interesting how each of their personalities interacted and got along (or didn't get along). I also liked watching the story unfold and seeing how the characters impacted the story with their actions. I became attached to these characters fast and cared about them which is a good sign. There were some beautiful but heartbreaking stories told with these characters, both with the good and bad guys. All the characters were interesting, not just the main characters which I liked.
3) The Fight Scenes - The fight scenes in this anime are OUT OF THIS WORLD! The fight scenes are well choregraphed. They really show off what animation can do. I always was engaged during a fight scene. They were exciting and I was curious to find out what power we would see next with the characters in the fights. I also thought since this anime deals with powers and demons, the people behind the fight scenes had to be creative with the fight scenes to show off the powers and the characters. This made for unpredictable fight scenes where I was surprised all the time.
4) Great OSTs - THE MUSIC IS SO GOOD! I love how the music supports the scenes ESPECIALLY the fight scenes. The music playing during the fight scenes is just EPIC!
5)Magic/Supernatural Elements - I loved all the magic and supernatural elements in this anime. As I said above, I loved seeing all of the character's abilities be revealed. It was awesome watching all of this magic and abilities play out in the fight scenes. The abilities added to the action and unpredictability of this drama. I constantly was surprised with how the creators of this anime raised the stakes with each fight or even as the fight went on. I am curious to see what new abilities and magic we get in Season 2.
6) The Humor - This drama is super dark sometimes. I will talk more about that below. I mean an anime about demons and cursed items is expected to be dark. I am glad this anime sticks in some nice humor here and there. Some of the humor is very funny and I actually laughed a lot during those scenes. This is the type of anime that needs that periodic humor.
THE CONS
1) Waiting for Second Season - I did not watch this anime in 2020 so I didn't have to wait for season 2 as long as some other people BUT it is still agony waiting for season 2. Season 2 is supposed to air sometime this summer so, I am excited for that. I am just excited to see more episodes with these characters.
2) How Dark and Violent it is - This didn't bother me because knowing that it is about curses and demons, it is supposed to be dark BUT it might bother other people. So, I will just say, there are some DARK scenes in this anime. In that same line, some of these scenes can be quite gory and obviously violent with the fight scenes. This anime might not be for you.
3) Took a little bit to understand the concept - I will say it took me a bit to get my head around the story and the characters. Once I did, I enjoyed this drama quite a bit. So, fair warning, it might take you a bit to understand everything about the story and get to know all of the characters.
