I am sure, unless you are living under a rock, you have heard of this recent Korean drama that has become a HIT and quite popular OUT OF NO WHERE! I mean, even the actors and the network both said that they did not realize how big it would be, especially internationally. Well, I waited for it to finish airing AND DOVE RIGHT IN! It is on VIKI where I am and HERE IS MY REVIEW FOR BEYOND EVIL!
*Now as per usual with any review I write, I will not be including any spoilers in this review.*
Here is a short synopsis of the movie - 2 police officers work together and pursue a serial killer in a small town but discover many more secrets than they were anticipating.
Due to not wanting to reveal anything and not have spoilers, I know the synopsis is very short and doesn't reveal a lot. Just know that it is SO MUCH DEEPER than the 1 sentence I gave you. When this drama was announced last year, I got VERY EXCITED FOR IT! I was sad when it finally premiered that I had nowhere to watch it. So, I had to wait to watch it BUT MAN IT WAS SO WORTH THE WAIT!
Now this review is going to be a little different. I have no cons with this drama. I thought it was an AMAZING drama and quite enjoyed it. In my opinion, it is a MUST WATCH drama especially if you are a fan of crime dramas. I am aware that not everyone likes crime dramas or maybe Beyond Evil wasn't your thing but HEY WATCH WHAT YOU ENJOY! Not every drama is for everyone, BUT MAN IT WORKED FOR ME!
So, here are 5 reasons why BEYOND EVIL is a MUST DRAMA of 2021, in my opinion.
1) THE STORY - Let me tell you, that short synopsis does not do this drama justice. This drama's story grabs ahold of you and doesn't let you go until you are watching the credits at the end of episode 16. You constantly are engaged trying to figure out the bad guy or pick up any clues that might have been revealed. The story also wraps up nicely. I felt like the writers closed everyone's stories and brought closer to everyone who needed it. It also allowed the audience to have closer and to say goodbye to these characters. This story is also not just another crime story. Yes, you are trying to find a killer but it is also a character piece about growth, hardship and relationships.
2) THE ACTING - Since you see who is the cast in this drama, YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT THE ACTING IN THIS DRAMA IS TOP NOTCH! The drama cast REMARKABLE actors and actresses and each played their role BRILLIANTLY! It was like every role was written with them in mind. I don't see how any of these actors could have been replaced with someone else. What I thought the actors portrayed the best was the emotions. These actors could act with their eyes and you just understood the emotions that their characters were going through by just looking at their eyes. For me, that is the sign of an AWESOME actor.
3) TWISTS AND TURNS - This drama does a MAGNIFICENT job at keeping you guessing. Every time you think you have figured everything out, it just adds in another secret or it gives you, the audience, more information. Everyone just seems like a suspect and those are the best kinds of crime dramas, in my opinion. My mouth dropped open with every cliffhanger ending and every reveal because I may have figured out a certain aspect but hadn't grasped the whole picture. The twists and turns didn't just have to do with the plot either. The drama has these set of characters so another aspect of the twists in this drama are the characters. Each episode, you learn another side or a different aspect of a character which gives us more insight into them. It might be a thought they have or a decision they make. The twists are also character based because you think you have someone figured out and then the episode ends with the character saying a line or internally thinking something that throws everything up in the air again. That is why I said above that Beyond Evil isn't just a plot-based crime drama but also characters come into play as well.
4) THE CHEMISTRY - You can't review Beyond Evil and not talk about the main leads. The chemistry between Shin Ha Kyun's character and Yeo Jin Goo's character is OFF THE CHARTS!! If these 2 actors were not the lead actors for this drama, I don't think Beyond Evil would be the same. It was like these roles WERE MADE FOR THEM! The way these 2 actors played and interacted off of one another while on screen together was ELECTRIFYING! It was definitely a HIGHLIGHT of this drama FOR SURE!
5) CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT - As I said above, this drama has a lot to say with and about their characters. There were some interesting character development throughout the drama, especially with the two leads. As the dynamic of the two leads' relationship changes throughout the drama, their characters change, mature and even seem to take on each other's original characteristics. I found that fascinating. This gave a different dynamic to their chemistry as well. You can tell these actors studied their characters and thought about how the plot affected their characters.
Overall, I went into Beyond Evil with no expectations AND IT BLEW ME AWAY! It was a beautiful and brilliant drama highlighted by AMAZING actors/actresses and a story that was exciting and emotional.
THERE ARE NO CONS FOR THIS DRAMA FOR ME.
