MY LOVE LETTER TO ANCIENT DETECTIVE
This drama premiered a year ago today AND I AM SO HAPPY IT DID!
Dear ANCIENT DETECTIVE,
You premiered EXACTLY A YEAR AGO and I started you on a whim. I wanted a detective drama and your synopsis fit what I was looking for. I had no expectations going in and didn't know at the time how much I would grow to love you. YOU SURPRISED ME SO MUCH! It may be because I didn't know what to expect. I am just so happy that I took a chance on you and I hope more people discover you soon.
I think what I loved the most about you was how Jian Bu Zhi was a people magnet. He had the "Wu Xie Effect" (Wu Xie from The Lost Tomb franchise) where everyone he met turned into a friend or an ally and wanted to help him. This resulted in this group of people who you grew to love and wanted to see more of. Everyone had their own strengths that they brought to the group but ultimately, they all wanted to protect Jian Bu Zhi.
We were introduced to Jian Bu Zhi, the genius amnesiac detective. I enjoyed watching him go around and solve cases. He was quiet but cared about the people he was trying to help or who had joined his little travel party. You gave us the loveable Zhao Wo Huan who just wanted to be the BEST WARRIOR he could be. I loved how EXTREMELY loyal he was. Even if it was after meeting Jian Bu Zhi for LIKE A DAY! 😂 We got Zhan Shi Qi THE BADASS ASSASSIN WHO USED AN UMBRELLA AS HER WEAPON! One of coolest characters and I LOVED HER! Ye Xiao Xiao joined the party late as the good-looking doctor BUT MAN DID HE MAKE AN ENTRANCE! Lastly, you got Si Ma Dang popping in and out, bringing a unique character to round out this group of misfits. Yeah, I started you for the cases and the story BUT STUCK AROUND BECAUSE OF THE CHARACTERS! You can't help but fall in love with them.
The story was entertaining. I liked meeting all the characters involved in each case and seeing our travel party solve them. WHAT STOOD OUT FOR ME WITH YOU WAS THE CINEMATOGRAPHY! You gave us a BEAUTIFUL drama with no budget! It was a pleasant surprise and I loved looking for shots and camera angles that took my breath away. You blessed our ears with some GORGEOUS OSTs that I still listen to today.
I just want you to know HOW MUCH I ADORE YOU! You may have been a small budget Chinese drama BUT YOU ARE A SPECIAL SMALL BUDGET CHINESE DRAMA! I want you to know that I miss watching you for the first time. I want more people to watch you and fall in love with you. I want more people to be introduced to the characters and go on their journey with them. PEOPLE NEED TO WATCH YOU SO I CAN RELIVE WATCHING YOU FOR THE FIRST TIME!
There is one thing I need from you, ANCIENT DETECTIVE....
WE NEED A SEASON 2!!! PLEASE GIVE US A SEASON 2.
